Mrs Sally Mbanefo, the Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), has called on the private sector and cooperate Nigerians to support the tourism sector by contributing to its growth and development.
Mbanefo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that cooperate Nigerians must begin to see the sector as their own pet project and baby by supporting the
government to develop it .
“Cooperate Nigerians must support tourism so that we can get value out of it. “The private sector must reach out; you must own the tourism sector through your support.
“ Government alone cannot do it and that is why I am reaching out to them now, they must partner us to give the sector a boost.’’
The Director-General lamented the poor financial status of the corporation noting that she had been running the organisation on good will.
“First of all, finance is always an issue but l have never been one to complain in the open but I was creative to find solutions to challenges confronting the sector.
“You know when you are trained as a
banker, it makes you a soldier and that is what worked for me in Lafarge.
“I have spent 29 years as a corporate
woman and out of it l had spent 21 years in finance and that is what works for me.’’ Mbanefo appealed to the National Assembly to pass an enabling law that would boost tourism in Nigeria. She also urged the educational sector to include culture in the curriculum of schools. (NAN)
