Udom seeks more FDI in maritime, tourism sectors

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has solicited for more foreign direct investment (FDI) in developing the maritime and tourism sectors of the state’s economy.

Udom said with the numerous opportunities in the maritime sector, including the development of the
beaches, the ongoing deep-sea port projects and the sporting facilities, the tourism potentials of the state
could be harnessed to add value to the coastal communities of the state.
Speaking when he received Ann Scott, Jamaican High Commissioner to Nigeria, accompanied by Belgium diplomats in Uyo, the state capital, Udom said the age-long brotherly identity existing between the people of Akwa Ibom, Jamaica and Belgium would also help in building ties in various sectors.

The governor said his administration had already immortalised the late Mary Slessor by naming streets and celebrating her role in the abolition of
the killing of twins, adding that the cordial relationship would be maintained.

Earlier, Ann Scott noted that the hospitality nature of the people of Akwa Ibom had been appreciated
across states, saying the visit was to seek more areas of cooperation between them.

She acknowledged that Jamaicans were proud people of African descent, stating that several features identify Jamaica, Belgium and Akwa Ibom
and mentioned the beautiful scenery, culture, humanitarian services as well as food products as areas the countries share in similarities.

She commended Nigerians love for reggae music, which she said was rooted in Jamaica, stressing that African heritage abound in her home country and expressed optimism that the cultural exchange through foreign direct investment would build African heritage and promote tourism.

Nations have the responsibility of acknowledging their past to help understand challenges, which their
forefathers went through, the high commissioner noted, and commended the state government for Immortalising the missionaries who enlightened the society on acts of slavery and other barbaric practice, stating that the feat was been appreciated by the international community.
