4 Most Important Types of Tour Operators in TourismIndustry

1. Inbound Tour Operator:

Tour operators who deal and handle directly inbound foreign tourists, provide them various services on their arrival and departure such as transfer, accommodation, transportation, sightseeing, entertainment, currency, insurance services etc. are known as inbound tour operators.

These tour operators formulate tour package individually or in collaboration with foreign tour operators. The packages may be marketed directly or by means of the intermediaries. In fact, inbound tour operators are the ‘image’ builders of a country as they convert all touristic resources of a nation into a sale-able commodity.

They also contribute valuable foreign exchange earnings to the economy of host country. Recognizing the vital role played by inbound tour operators in the healthy growth and promotion of tourism, every nation has extended several financial and non-financial incentives to these operators.

2. Outbound Tour Operator:

These categories of operators are specialized in promoting and designing multi-national tours especially foreign countries. The outbound tour operator sells a package tour to an individual or a group of people of his own country to another country or a number of countries for a specific pre-decided period.

The outbound tour operator arranges travel documents, transportation to a central point where the tour starts and contracts with inbound tour operators/ground operators to provide accommodation, transportation, local sightseeing and other services as needed throughout the tour. Generally, these operators work in liaison with the inbound tour operators/ground operators and offer services involving meeting inbound tour group at the airport, transferring the tour group from the airport to the arranged place of accommodation in town hotel, arranging/organizing local sightseeing that may be a single day or multi days tour of the home state, region or area. These may be in the form of business or leisure oriented tours.

3. Domestic Tour Operator:

Today, the domestic market has witnessed attractive growth rates as large players in the travel industry are aggressively entering and promoting this market. Leading tour operators usually focus on the international market where margins are higher but now, in addition, they are floating new packages to create a niche in this segment to tap the vast potential in the domestic market.

Even leading hotel chains are also receiving healthier response in this context. In the UK, USA, Japan, India, China and Hong Kong many tour operators are specialized in domestic
holiday packages. Generally, domestic tour operators operate within the boundary of home
country and cater the diverse needs of individual and group travellers. They promote tour packages both through their own outlets and other retail travel agents. In fact, they are contributing to the cause of national integration.

4. Ground Operator:

Ground operator is also referred to as, ‘reception operator’, ‘destination management companies’ and ‘handling agencies’ e.g. ground operators in the United States— ‘reception operator, ‘handling agencies’ in India and destination management companies in UK.

Ground operators are normally expected to provide ‘land arrangements’ at a particular destination. Thus, a ground operator who provides the services required by large tour companies where they do not have a local branch/office or are not dealing at the source with the principal suppliers such as hoteliers, transport operators, car rentals, entertainment organizations and so forth.

The reception operator secures, coordinates, supervises and handles accounts/payments of all services related to the tour in his region/area. His services are invaluable for an
efficient and successful operation of inclusive group as well as foreign
independent tours.

The travel industry is very young compared to other industries, globally. It did not really gain momentum until 1945. However, it has changed dramatically in just the past four
decades and there have been many drastic changes in the making of these fastest growing industry-deregulations of airlines in 1978, introduction of AMTRAK in 1974, information technology, globalization, changing public attitudes and so forth.

Many large scale travel agencies and tour operators have changed their product lines through merger, acquisition and franchise. In today’s volatile business environment, not only is the competition among travel agencies/tour operators intense but tourists have wide options of dealing directly with tourism product suppliers.

Tourists can now obtain his/her airline ticket, hotel booking, car rental and other services through computerized reservation system. Thereby, the success of travel agencies/tour operators is mostly determined by their ability to design package tours and operation’s service quality concept.

According to Sasser, Olsen and Wychoff, in order to design quality tour package, travel agencies/ tour operators must define the ‘service concept’ in terms of tangible features, range of services, and intangible features.

Thus, a tour operator must consider service concept to compete others and to match the demands of the travellers. He should arrange, plan and manage the travel services/ingredients – travel information, travel tickets, travel documents, itinerary, accommodation, transportation, car rental, cruise ship, travel insurance, currency, and other ground services in an efficient, extensive and profitable manner in order to win over the targeted market segment.

However, in the operational aspect, service delivery process is very complex and complicated, which requires strategic management approach in maintaining the sequence
of these activities.

It shows how successfully a tour company performs its service activities to create a travel, and market it. Further, it creates a profound impact in ensuring satisfied travelers /clients and the image building of the organization

5 reasons to skip Lagos and head for Ibadan on a date

10google2-popup
Ibadan is generally regarded as the ugly duckling when compared to popular sister cities in the western parts of the country, especially Lagos. While Lagos is indeed the hub of Nigeria and holds everything essential to keeping a visitor enthralled, Ibadan is also a good idea. Maybe even a better idea than Lagos.
When people think of Lagos, they focus on the peripheral: the great food and the opportunity for shopping, the bustling night life, the myriad tourist sites and fantastic architecture. What many do not know is that Ibadan has many of the same attributes, only with its own twist as well as profound benefits.

No Traffic
Traffic is an everyday occurrence in Lagos and can steal the joy from any commuter’s day. There is no exception to area or time, almost every part of the city has a level of traffic and at almost all times within the day- not just rush hours. It can literally take you 2 hours to cover 1 kilometer in some areas. Commuters have to head out extra early to run errands or cut their fun short so as to get home early. In Ibadan however, this is not a problem. While its inhabitants witness occasion traffic, it is not a standard occurrence and it is certainly not a part of their lives. Unlike Lagos, you can actually have great value for your time while commuting within Ibadan.
crystal-room-1

Low-cost accommodation
Lagos has a plethora of hotels, from budget to luxury; however, the room rates are most times expensive  when compared to room rates in other parts of the country and thus pose a challenge to travellers, especially budget travellers. In Ibadan, there are upscale hotels that offer same service as upscale hotels in Lagos, however the rates are cheaper. For instance, the The Carlton Gate Hotel, Ibadan, which is rated a 5-star hotel starts from as low as N20,700 on Jovago.com, while Sheraton Lagos Hotel, a 5-star hotel in Lagos, with even a lesser rating on same portal, starts from N48,000. Ibadan also has a number of budget hotel options that offer even more value to travellers.

Micra instead of Moluwe
In Lagos, budget travellers who have to resort to public transport end up with bus options: Moluwe and danfo buses, as the taxi option also comes as steep price. In Ibadan however, public transport is not only even cheaper, but gives the commuter much more privacy and comfort. The popular means of transportation is via Micra, a sedan taxi (not necessarily of Nissan brand as the name suggests) which picks 4-5 passengers per time. Passengers in this sedan painted white with blue stripes pay as low as N50 for certain destinations, a situation not possible with the Moluwe or danfo within Lagos.

Cheaper food
No doubt, Lagos offers a bunch of gastronomic delights for the hungry traveller, however, the food do not come cheap, at least when compared to food in Ibadan. Even though the number of restaurants, cafes, bukkas and fast food joints in Lagos may be larger than the those Ibadan, the cost of consumption is relatively higher. An average meal in a standard lagos (budget) restaurants starts from N1, 000, however in Ibadan, you can get same food with better ambiance for as low as N500. You are able to save more on food while visiting Ibadan without missing out on the local delicacies or sticking to you preferred variety: Chinese, Indian, French, e.t.c.

A better chance at love
It is no secret that love is hard to find in Lagos. Most of its inhabitants are so focused on making money or building their career and have no time for serious relationships. Single visitors to the city usually assert that the good ‘ones’ within the city are either hooked or taken. In Ibadan however, there is better opportunity at meeting “the one” as there are many options. Also, the restaurants and hang out spots are affordable and you easily can go on dates or engage in activities that encourage love and romance without breaking bank.

9 mistakes tourists make when visiting Calabar

calabar-festival-2y29108wt81wm6ywqbgkqy Calabar, popularly referred to as Canaan City, has a complicated yet fascinating history. One of the Nigeria’s famous travel destinations, numerous attractions abound for tourists paying a visit to this beautiful city.
However, although it is common to make mistakes when exploring the unknown, certain flubs can turn your trip into a disappointing experience, especially if you are a first time visitor.

Here are the ten common mistakes that travelers make when visiting Calabar. Hopefully, by looking at these mistakes, you will avoid replicating them, and thus get more enjoyment from a vacation to this land rich in culture.

Arriving in high season
A significant percentage of visitors arrive Calabar from November through January for the famous Calabar Carnival. If you are in for a wild time, then this is the best period to take a holiday there but if some peace and quiet is what you want, this may not be the best time to visit for a unique and enjoyable experience.
Work towards arriving during off-peak season as you will escape long lines at the leading museums and tourist attractions plus getting tables in restaurants or rooms at hotels will be easier.

Being easy prey for pickpockets
The odds of being mugged in Calabar are low however, with pick-pocketing and purse-snatching…it’s a different story. Many tourists invite theft by carrying wallets and passports in their hip pockets or wearing bags with gaping zips slung over their shoulders. It is important to hide the wallet in a safe place such as a zippered security pocket, or wear the small purse under a jacket or sweater. It is also important to carry a backup credit card, cash, and passport in a neck wallet inside your clothing.

Straying from researched sites
When visiting for the first time, you may want to stick to the tourist sites that you have read about and researched on, as you assume it is safer and is the best way to get the full Calabar experience, however, restricting yourself to the common tourist trails will deny you the opportunity to create your own unique experiences. Do not just follow what others have done, dare to explore outside the commonly done and seen, as often times the best experiences and the biggest opportunities are found off the beaten path.
calabar-calabar-roundabout
Acquiring souvenirs
While visiting the town, you may be tempted to buy many  souvenirs either for personal use or to give to loved ones. However, you need to watch out for overpriced souvenirs, especially the one’s which you are likely not to use after that it makes the trip home. If you must, buy souvenirs that you can easily carry, and has a lasting appeal.

Littering
A relatively clean city, most tourist visit this place because of its spartan landscape. Littering is not acceptable around the metropolis. So, do not to throw food wrappers, empty plastic cans or cigarette butts onto the streets as you can get  fined for it. Wait till you can find a trash can and discard it properly.

Expecting to be waited on very attentively in a restaurants
Calabar has a variety of restaurants to meet the taste of any visitor, from low budget to high-end, however, most of the restaurants do not offer quick service as the ones in some cities like Lagos or Abuja. It can be as a result of the general laid back vibe in the area, however, you may just want to sit back, be patient, and flag down your waiter when you need something, and be patient in knowing they are probably working very hard. The good news is, you will rarely be presented with the check until you ask for it.

Blindly trusting road directions
Locals in calabar are generally friendly and willing to help visitors. If you are confused with your directions and need to get help from a local, rather than sticking to information given by one person, you might want to cast a broad net of directions.  Ask more than one person for directions to the same place. If the person hesitates or appears to not be certain of their answer, seek additional elsewhere.

Overindulging
The native meals here are relatively affordable and super-tasty. This is why even a normally health-conscious visitor will ditch their strict food rules as soon as they land in the city. While it is a manageable lapse if you are on holiday for a fortnight, it becomes rather more problematic if you are planning to stay for a longer period.

Being culturally insensitive
Calabar has a very rich culture as well as a unique language that influences their English pronunciations. A lot of Nigerian comedians tell jokes with the local accent however, it is important to understand the culture and the surrounding when visiting.  Having an unbiased mind will help you blend better, absorb the culture in a more interactive way and avoid insulting them unintentionally.

Five (5) ways to kill boredom on a long road trip

16968_Bananastock
The idea of going on a road trip with friends and family is exciting – especially if you are not the one driving – until you are 3 to 5 hours in and it dawns on you that you still have a long stretch of road ahead with the thought of boredom looming.

Rather than sitting idle fiddling with apps on your gadgets, get creative with how you spend those idle hours.

Catch up on work
This might sound tedious especially if you are on your way to a vacation and looking to escape the hassles that come with your job. However, rather than waste all that time just sitting and staring or doing something equally mundane, you can invest that time in your work, strategizing, planning and making notes either on your laptop, phone or a piece of paper. This works best if you own a business as you could actually come up with a plan that can revolutionize your entire company in the long run.

Learn a new skill
Thanks to technology, almost anything can be virtually accomplished via the internet these days. You can learn how to build a shelf, style your hair, sew on a button or even bake a cake in less time than you can imagine. Download the YouTube app and search for skills you are interested in and you are certain to find DIY videos to keep you busy all through the trip.

Start a Vlog
A ‘video blog’ may seem like a  very technical way to share ideas or opinions as it tends to require the use of a camera, a video editing app, and a long process of posting and publishing, but it is actually easy to pull off while on road trip with just a mobile phone. The good thing about vlogs is that it is they are relative, there is no firm structure as to what you have to say or do for it to be accepted. You can add excitement to your trip by recording it all on a vlog.

Sketch a portrait
Certainly not an outlandish idea! If you have hours to kill on a car, bus or train, why not flex your artistic muscles and dare to sketch a portrait. It does not have to be perfect, it is the challenge to create something even remotely appreciable that makes it exciting. You can copy a profile picture on your phone or you can start tough by putting your memory to task and attempt a sketch inspired by a mental picture.

Write a movie script
Writing is something anyone can do. All you need is the ability to scribble letters and with a bit of imagination and focus, you can actually pull of an excellent movie script which can transpire into a blockbuster movie someday.

CALABAR: TINAPA RESORT

Tinapa is a business and leisure resort just north of Calabar, south eastern Nigeria associated with the Calabar Free Trade Zone. It is being developed in four phases under a Private Public Partnership (PPP) promoted by the Government of Cross River State. The resort is located by the Calabar River, contiguous with the Calabar Free Trade Zone.

Facilities

The Tinapa Free Zone & Resort has facilities for retail and wholesale activities as well as leisure and entertainment. For consumers, the resort has about 80,000 square metres (860,000 sq ft) of lettable space for retail and wholesale made up of four emporiums of 10,000 square metres (110,000 sq ft) each and smaller shops, warehouses, and so on. An entertainment strip contains a casino, digital cinema, children's arcade, restaurants, a mini amphitheater, a night club and pubs. There is an artificial tidal lake that feeds from the Calabar River, a Water Park / Leisure Land and parking Space for about 4,000 cars.

Business facilities include an open exhibition area for trade exhibitions and other events, and a movie production studio commonly called "Studio Tinapa" or "Nollywood". It is set to become the most modern film production studio in Nigeria. There is a 243 room international three star Hotel. The resort also has a truck terminal, and gets power from an independent power plant.

Project history

Tinapa was initiated by Governor Donald Duke as a way to boost business and tourism in the state. Over $350 million was spent on initial development. The first phase of Tinapa Business Resort & Free Zone, Calabar, was commissioned on the 2 April 2007. Tinapa is a 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) drive from Calabar by a roundabout route, but the Federal government is building a more direct 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) access road to link it with the city.

The legal status of the Tinapa Free Trade zone has been uncertain. It is owned by the Cross River state government, but only the Federal government can operate a free trade zone. Governor Liyel Imoke appealed to the Federal Government to take a stake in the project, and to remove uncertainty about its status which is hindering investment. He suggested that one approach could be to decouple the leisure facilities from the trading zone. A February 2008 report by ThisDay newspaper said the Federal Government had not yet approved the operating procedures and guidelines. The resort was almost deserted. The few shops that were staffed would not sell their goods out of concern that customs officials would then force them to close.  A CNN report in 2010 showed that the complex was still largely empty, while interest payments on the construction cost of the complex were rising. Liyel Imoke told the CNN reporter that the state government was looking for private sector investors who could run the project more efficiently.

A March 2010 report in the Daily Champion was optimistic. The report acknowledged that the project had suffered from bureaucratic delays, that there had been rumors of corruption and project abandonment, with key infrastructure incomplete. However, the report said that 90% of infrastructure and facilities were now ready, and that shops were now selling duty-free goods. It also claimed that the resort was increasingly being used for business and government functions, as planned. In September 2010 Imoke said the government was focusing on resuscitating the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort. A May 2011 report from the Daily Trust was entitled "Tinapa is dying". It said most of the shops had closed, and the other facilities such as the exhibition space and movie studio had not been used for a long time. The hotel was open but had hardly any guests. Only the water park was busy, since the reporter had visited during a school holiday.

Travel Tip: How To Beat Jet Lag

Jet lag refers to disturbed sleep patterns, weakness and disorientation caused by travelling. It happens when your normal body clock is disrupted by travelling through several time zones.
Jet lag is worse when you move from west to east because the body finds it harder to adapt to a shorter day than a longer one.
GP Dr Dawn Harper explains: “Our body clock is primed to respond to a regular rhythm of daylight and darkness. It is thrown out of sync when it experiences daylight at what it considers the wrong time, and it can take several days to readjust."
Travellers who take medication according to a strict timetable (such as insulin or oral contraceptives) should seek medical advice from a health professional before their journey.
Before you travel
Top up your sleep

Make sure you're fully rested before you travel. If you’re flying overnight and you can get a bit of sleep on the flight, it will help you to stay up until night time once you arrive at your destination.

Change your sleep routine

A few days before you travel, start getting up and going to bed earlier (if you're travelling east) or later (if you're travelling west). During the flight, try to eat and sleep according to your destination's local time.

Have a stopover on the way

Including a stopover in your flight will make it easier to adjust to the time change, and you'll be less tired when you arrive. Take advantage of any short airport transits to have a refreshing shower or swim in the terminal, if possible.

During your journey
Keep hydrated

Dehydration can intensify the effects of jet lag, especially after sitting in a dry aeroplane cabin for many hours. Avoid alcoholic and caffeine drinks (such as coffee, tea and cola), which can disturb sleep.

Preparing for sleep

During your flight, try to create the right conditions when preparing for sleep. Eyeshades and earplugs may help you sleep. Regular exercise during the day may also help you sleep, but avoid strenuous exercise immediately before bedtime.

Use remedies with caution

Many airline staff take melatonin, a hormone formed by the body at night or in darkness, to try to fight jet lag. Sleeping medication is not recommended as it doesn't help your body to adjust naturally to a new sleeping pattern.

At your destination
Anchor sleep

Try to get as much sleep in every 24 hours as you normally would. A minimum block of four hours’ sleep during the local night – known as “anchor sleep” – is thought to be necessary to help you adapt to a new time zone. If possible, make up the total sleep time by taking naps during the day.

Natural light

The cycle of light and dark is one of the most important factors in setting the body’s internal clock. Exposure to daylight at the destination will usually help you adapt to the new time zone faster.

Short trips

For stays of less than three or four days, it may be better for the traveller to remain on "home time" (that is, timing activities such as sleeping and eating to occur at the times they would have occurred at home) to minimize disruption to the normal sleep-wake cycle although this is not always practical.
